Financial Troubles

Okay, the reason I went several months there without posting is that NOTHING good has been happening in my life.

I STILL haven't been able to find a job because before the nation's economy collapsed, our city's economy had already collapsed when a flood wiped out all of downtown and a large part of residential area. So finding a fulltime job has been nearly impossible.

I've been donating plasma for money to buy food, and even that got so bad that my girlfriend had to start giving me money every week because I came down with the flu and couldn't donate for a while. All the groceries I've bought in the last few weeks have involved putting something between bread because that's cheap.

But the worst thing of all is my ticket. A friend of mine who has been in Afghanistan for a long time came back to visit and for his last day, he wanted me to drive him up to Iowa City to visit another one of our friends. When we were coming back, a cop started following us and eventually, pulled us over. I don't have insurance right now because like I said, I'm struggling just to eat, and since I'm 19, with an accident on my record, insurance is pushing about 100 dollars a month for me. They were going to tow my car and leave me stranded in Iowa City but I explained I had to get my friend back because he was shipping out again in the morning, so instead they just gave me a $380 ticket for driving without insurance.

My ticket's due in a week, on the 21st. If I spend no money between now and then, donate plasma at every possible opportunity, and completely drain what's left of my savings, leaving me with nothing to fall back on, I'll be about 80 dollars short. Even if my girlfriend loans me her entire paycheck, we'll still have to come up with about twenty bucks, and I don't want to do that to her.

We'll probably find someway to pull through, that's not much more money that we need, but even if we do, it'll still really suck.

I can't believe money has gotten so bad that I'm comparing the price per ounce on loaves of bread that both cost less than $1.25.

I don't have money either right now, but I could probably find a way to help.

@grammarboy - As much as I'd appreciate it, I don't think that you can help if you don't have money. Unless you have food; I guess that would work too. Haha. But yeah, I don't think anything short of mailing me some money so that it arrives before next tuesday is really going to do any good.

I just got an idea. You can buy groceries online. I could in theory buy you groceries.

@grammarboy - Haha. I doubt any Cedar Rapids stores have that.

first of all I think they do at hy-vee...
And Gabe- seriously I know my parents wouldn't hesitate to give you food. I know that you haven't seen them for years, but if I call and explain that you're going through a rough time, they won't think anything of it. I could even tell my mom not to tell your parents.
Thirdly, have you considered asking a church? I know my home church does things like this sometime- fulfilling needs in the community. You'd have to talk to one of the people in leadership, but they won't pressure you to go to church or anything. And if not that, I know a lot of people at home who would love to help out.

If nothing else, I WILL come home and make sure you're getting something to eat. I still consider you a friend. Hang in there, Gabe.

If you buy insurance now, you'll only need to pay a down payment (1-2 months). I remember telling you that GMAC doesn't check your driving record. Call them up or get online for a quote. You can also go through Progressive or GEICO online, but they may be a little more. Anyhoo, you just have to take your proof of insurance to the court house (your insurance card or the declarations page from your policy) to get the ticket dismissed.

p.s.-If you're going to be flat ass broke, you may as well be in college where you at least have a guaranteed room and cafeteria food available 3 times a day. Seriously Gabe, the only reason to put off school is if you're making a lot of money at a job you enjoy.

Oh yeah, you can cancel the insurance and get a pro-rated refund after you get the ticket dismissed. I recommend carrying insurance just because you are in soooooo much trouble if you get in an uninsured accident.

@elisabethcarrie - Room and food are not guaranteed, they're actually more expensive than off campus.

@elisabethcarrie - Will the judge really toss it out if I just show up in court with insurance proof? Wouldn't I still be in trouble for not having it when I got pulled over?

$1,710.00 for 6 months of coverage.

@pandapanda2 - Yes, they will drop it.  Some insurance companies will even back date the policy for you, so you can have it start before you got your ticket.  Nice loophole, huh?

Room and board can be covered with student loans and you can save money on gas.  In fact, you could just get rid of your car and work on campus or within walking/public transportation distance.  Just getting rid of your car would free up almost $3,800 a year.
